Interview Hatesphere: Jakob Haagen Nyholm

Enkele weken geleden bracht Hatesphere een nieuw album uit. De naam van dit album is "The Great Bludgeoning" en de recensie kan u hier na lezen. Gitarist Jakob Haagen Nyholm beantwoorde al onze vragen

Can you describe the band for the people who don't know you?

HateSphere is a modern thrashband with speed and slow parts, that will kick you in the balls and make you bang your head! Five guys who fires it up on stage and have a lot of contact with the audience. With the fun we have on stage, we include the audience in.

The new singer is definitely a good acquisition which is proven by the great new cd. Where did you find him?

He’s actually a good friend of ours. He played in a Danish band called “As We Fight”. We asked him if he would try out the job and he agreed :). We were actually gonna pick him almost without the try outs because we knew he was the right guy! It is also very important that he is a good friend, ‘cause we spent a lot of time together when we are on tour, so we need to get along. :)

How was it with the band when the old singer left the band?

Things started of with a very bad mood for all of us. It was a hard time dealing with another loss of a singer. But we all felt that we wanted to bring this band further. And we were not done playing all these tunes and writing more music with this band! So we started the hunt for a new singer. :)

The growls from Hansen goes through your whole body, how does he do that?

I think it is his inner beast bursting out of him, finally! Hehe, I really don't know how he does it :). But he is actually doing some studies on how to do it so he does not ruin his voice. He is a very thoughtful guy.

Are you guys preparing a new tour, any Belgium shows?

We are actually doing two small European tours in November and December this year. And we are playing Torhout in Belgium on the 10th of December :). So come and join the party that day!

The drums jumps literally in the eye. What a force! How many times do you practice each week?

The drumming on this album is amazing. Mike did a great job putting them down and he was fast as hell! We really don't practice that much, we know our stuff. We live far apart so it would be difficult to practice every week. But everyone of us practice at home often to keep the songs tight!

Are you guys happy with the outcome of the album?

Very happy indeed! I think it is a very strong album with a lot of diversity. We kind of just made songs and didn't think too much. Just concentrated on making songs we thought was good. And Tue Madsen at the Antfarm did a hell of a job with the sound!

What is your favorite album that you have made?

I have only been on the last two, but of those two I think “The Great Bludgeoning” is the strongest. The feeling about this album is better for me, but it might just be the fact that we just made it and it feels great to get it out there for all to listen too :) .
If I were to pick one of the older albums, I would have to say “Ballet of The Brute!”. It is a killer album. It feels very oldschool and the sound is not as polished as the others (not counting the new one in).

With which bands you want to go on tour?

Hehe! There is a lot of bands that would cool to tour with. I would love to share the stage with Lamb of God or Chimaira. We shared the stage with Nevermore last year on our second US-tour and that was a huge thing for me personally! That is my favourite band (RIP).
The Black Dahlia Murder is very high on my list also. Cool guys and great music.

Which bands inspires you?

I am very much inspired by all kinds of music in general. I listen to a lot of hardrock and glam, but also sing-a-songwriters. Depends on my mood, I think. But if I should name a few that have really inspired me, I would have to say Nevermore, Metallica and In Flames! All 3 of them are very different from each other and all of them very much built up by the guitars. Nevermore is also built up by the vocal lines, but Jeff Loomis delivers the best riffs ever!

Who came out with the bandname?

It was a joint effort back in 2000. We were called Necrosis, just landed our first record deal, and we wanted it to be a fresh start. We never really liked the old band name, so we searched for a new one. Well, we ended up with HateSphere, haha.  We think it suits our music...

How did you end up with Napalm Records?

We were on SPV before, but they went bankrupt. We actually just shipped the album around, and Napalm showed a lot of interest.

What are the weirdest things that ever happened in the backstage?

I am sorry to say that backstage stories are confidential ;). A lot of stupid things happen here and if you guys come to a show soon, you might get to see what that might be.

Can you describe HateSphere in 3 words?

Thrashy - Groovy - Fun

You can still walk on the streets without being recognized?

Hehe yes I can :). It does not happen that often. But I have had a few experiences at my previous job. Some young guys where talking in low voices close to me and finally after some time they came to me and asked if I was playing guitar in HateSphere :) They told all the other employees that I was very famous (hehe). But that's about it :)

What is the strangest gift a fan ever gave to you?

Unfortunately I haven't been given anything strange actually. But at a festival in Bari Italy, I saw a guy standing at the side of the stage just before our show in a Motley Crue shirt!! I am a huge Motley fan, so I asked him if I could buy his shirt. At first he didn't want to give it up, but after a few minute he actually gave it to me as a present! Now it has been my on-stage shirt for the last two ‘Headbangers Ball’-tours in Denmark. Thank you very much for that shirt :)

What do you know about Belgium?

We played a tour with a band from Belgium ‘The Dying’. Very cool band and very cool guys. They told us about the Belgium chocomilk? Does that sound about right hehe? I must say that I'm not the big country-knower, but I really enjoy playing in Belgium.
