Op Alcatraz Metal Fest dat dit jaar doorging op de terreinen van het Katho Kortrijk, was Nightwish de headliner (een review kan je hier lezen). Dit was de voorlaatste show van deze tour voor deze Finse metalband, de Imaginaerum tour zat er dus bijna op. Hoog tijd om oprichter Tuomas Holopainen eens aan de tand te voelen over het verloop van de tour, de gang van zaken, toekomstplannen, zijprojecten en andere (ludieke) zaken! We ontmoetten Tuomas en Nightwish manager Ewo aan hun tourbus, waar Troy Donockley Tuomas nog een goocheltrucje aan het uitleggen was.

Eerst en vooral, hoe gaat het met jou vandaag? Had je een goede reis?

Ja, we zijn enkele uren geleden geland met het vliegtuig en dan met de bus naar hier gereden. Het gaat heel goed met mij nu. Ik heb net vier uur geslapen, heb een lekkere maaltijd gegeten, een klein beetje rode wijn gedronken… Ik voel me in topvorm.

Hoe is de festival tour gegaan tot nu toe?

Het gaat uitstekend, heel goed! Wanneer je festivals doet, gaat het een beetje als volgt: je vertrekt voor twee dagen, dan speel je een show en dan keer je terug, dan spendeer je wat tijd thuis. Ik verkies enigszins de lange tours in een tourbus omdat dit zo opgedeeld is doorheen de zomer.

Dus je gaat echt naar huis voor enkele dagen?

Ja, we gaan altijd naar huis in tussentijd omdat het slechts voor enkele dagen is. Dus ga ik gewoon naar huis en dan maai ik het gras, betaal ik de rekeningen en zo’n dingen en dan keer ik terug.

Kijk je uit naar het optreden van vanavond? Heb je enige verwachtingen hier op Belgisch gebied?

Niet echt, dit is de eerste keer dat we op dit festival spelen, dus ik weet niet echt wat te verwachten. Er zijn nog maar twee shows te gaan voor de hele tour, we zijn al zo’n jaar en half bezig. Dus er is een soort tinteling in de lucht omdat het morgen allemaal zal eindigen.

M’era Luna wordt de laatste show. Hoe voel je je daarbij, dat het de laatste show zal zijn?

Een beetje gemengde gevoelens. Ik ben heel blij om terug naar huis te gaan, om alles even achter mij te laten en dan aan het nieuwe album te beginnen werken… Maar er is ook die soort tinteling, dat gevoel omdat ik deze mensen niet meer zal zien voor een lange tijd, of toch niet op deze manier. We zullen een klein feestje houden maandag voor het einde van de tour, om vaarwel zeggen, het verleden te herdenken en ons gewoon te amuseren.

Dus dat zal echt de laatste show worden?

Dat wordt het echt, ja. De volgende show zal pas in de lente van 2015 zijn ten vroegste.

Jullie speelden recentelijk op Wacken Open Air, hoe heb je dit optreden ervaren?

We probeerden gewoon niet te denken aan het feit dat het zou gefilmd worden voor een live dvd of wat het ook gaat worden. Dus het ging uitstekend goed. Ik denk dat het de grootste show was die we ooit gedaan hebben wat betreft publiek, er waren ongeveer 75.000 mensen daar.

Maar jullie zijn al eerder op Wacken geweest?

Ja, dat klopt.

Was het dan anders dan ervoor?

Ik denk dat er meer mensen waren dan ervoor. Het zag er fantastisch uit vanop het podium, dus ik hoop dat de camera’s dat ook kunnen filmen hebben. Het was een van de beste shows deze zomer, dus goeie timing.

Waarom is er beslist om de show nu net op Wacken te filmen?

Ik denk dat een van de redenen was omdat er al een camera ploeg was. Alles was al opgezet, we moesten enkel onze eigen crew inhuren. Voor praktische redenen was het dus het makkelijkst om dat daar te doen, maar het is ook een legendarisch festival met het meest volk, dus dat oogt ook goed.

Enig idee wanneer we de Imaginaerum world tour documentaire inclusief het concert kunnen verwachten?

Als alles gaat zoals gepland, voor kerstmis dit jaar. Ik zou zeggen november/december. Het plan is om het te proberen uitbrengen voor kerstmis.

Met zoveel fans altijd op een optreden, herken je soms de mensen die er vaak zijn vooraan het podium, je weet wel, die gekke fans altijd op de eerste rij?

Vrij vaak ja. Ze zijn gek in de goede zin van het woord. Er is bijvoorbeeld zo’n Finse bende die je vaak ziet.

Ja, ik ken ze.

Je kent ze? Eliel, Maria, Krista. Dit zijn prachtige mensen, we hebben hen al vaak ontmoet na de show. Het zijn zowat semi-vrienden geworden zelfs, het is altijd een hartverwarmend gevoel om die mensen vooraan te zien. Ze zullen er morgen op M’era Luna zijn.

Dat weet ik, ik ga ze ophalen en naar daar brengen!

Echt waar?! Oooh, ok dat is uitstekend! Sweet, heel leuk!

Van alle shows op de Imaginaerum tour, is er een bepaalde show die je het liefst had of die je zal blijven herinneren voor een bepaalde reden?

Het is echt onmogelijk om een show voorop te stellen. Maar de laatste twee Finse festivals, Ilosaarirock en Sotkamon Syke, waren iets heel exceptioneel om een of andere reden. Ook Wacken Open Air omwille van veel redenen. Maar het zijn er zoveel dat ik er niet een kan uitkiezen.

Over Imaginaerum, hoe vergelijk je het met voorgaande albums?

Wel, het is speciaal omdat het de film omvatte. We zijn zowat eerst voor de film gegaan in het project, dat was het centrale punt in de release. Het album is een soort soundtrack voor de film, dus dat maakt het heel speciaal. Het is het meest theatrale, meest georkestreerde album dat we ooit gemaakt hebben, het voelde aan als het juiste om te doen op die moment. I weet niet echt goed wat we als volgende gaan doen. Ik heb een gevoel dat het iets simpeler gaat worden, een beetje terug in de tijd.

Dus een beetje terug naar de roots?

Ja, een beetje meer naar een band album, we hebben dit orkestrale, gevarieerde spectrum zowat maximaal bekeken, dat is hoe ik erover denk. Maar misschien, je weet nooit hoe je gedachten werken… Maar ik heb al drie nieuwe nummers klaar, het is opnieuw ietwat anders.

Heb je die nummers geschreven tijdens de tour?

Gedurende de laatste maand zou ik zeggen. Wanneer ik thuis ben, schrijf ik gewoon zaken op en nu heb ik drie nieuwe nummers klaar.

Hoe zijn de reacties op de film? Zowel in het algemeen als van de fans?

Vrij verdeelt. Sommige mensen hebben echt de boodschap begrepen waarover het gaat. Wanneer ze me zeggen dat het op de band lijkt, vind ik dat een groot compliment, dat is waar we op doelden. Het is zeker geen commerciële film, we dachten nooit dat het dat zou worden, dus het was ook geen groot commercieel succes, vooral in Finland, daar was het een grote flop eigenlijk.

Vooral in Finland? Ik zou het tegenovergestelde verwacht hebben.

Ja, er is iets gebeurd in Finland, ik weet het niet. Maar aan de andere kant was het wel veel beter ontvangen in Duitsland en Rusland. Er komen vaak mensen naar mij die zeggen dat het hen echt geraakt heeft en dat ze er echt van genoten hebben, dat het raar was maar dat ze de beelden, de muziek en het verhaal leuk vonden, … Ik ben echt trots op het resultaat, de hele band is dat. Totaal geen spijt van, we hebben het beste gedaan wat we konden met de tijd en het budget dat we hadden. Maar ik heb al maanden niet aan de film gedacht. Ik keek al vooruit.

Wat zijn de plannen voor Nightwish in de nabije toekomst?

Wel, we hebben allemaal onze zijprojecten. Ik heb dit solo album over Scrooge McDuck (Dagobert Duck) dat eraan komt, daar ga ik de komende twee maand mee bezig zijn. Floor gaat verder met ReVamp, Marco doet zijn eigen projecten, Emppu heeft Brother Firetribe. Misschien wat tijd vrij nemen, tijd spenderen met de familie. Ik ga een korte vakantie nemen naar Nieuw-Zeeland in de lente. Al deze dingen gaat de batterijen opnieuw opladen om nieuwe nummers te schrijven en klaar te zijn voor volgende zomer. Op 1 juli zullen we de repetitiekamer opnieuw ingaan.

Over de muziek rondom het Disney figuur Dagobert Duck, hoe staat het daarmee?

Het gaat goed, uitstekend. Ik ben echt opgewonden over het project. Alle nummers zijn klaar en we gaan binnen drie weken naar Londen om al het orkest, percussies, koor, zang, … op te nemen. Dan keren we terug naar Finland om wat gitaar, piano en al die zaken te doen, alles mixen, … Het zou klaar moeten zijn tegen eind oktober. Dan kijken we uit naar een vroege april 2014 release.

Dat klinkt als een groot project voor jou!

Het is een persoonlijk zijproject, ja. Ik ben niet van plan om hier live shows mee te doen. Het is gewoon iets dat ik moest doen, dat van mijn geest moest.

Van wat ik gehoord heb, zijn er nog steeds geen plannen om officieel met Floor als zangeres door te gaan. Heb je hier enige reactie op of kan je me hier iets over vertellen?

Welja… Het zit zo, we hebben er nog niet echt over nagedacht, omdat er nu nog geen nood aan is… Het is zo’n rotzooi geweest, opnieuw, ik voel dat ik een maand of twee nodig heb om gewoon even niet aan het vocal probleem te denken. Tegen het einde van het jaar moeten we een beslissing maken. Maar iedereen realiseert zich dat ze bovenaan de lijst staat natuurlijk. Maar ik wil nog niets officieel zeggen of doen, ik wil de beslissing nu nog niet maken.

Natuurlijk, dat begrijp ik.

Maar ze is ongelooflijk, ik heb niets slecht over haar te zeggen.

Dus voor de zijprojecten, we hebben Marco gehad, Emppu, … Bijvoorbeeld Troy, doet hij ook dingen in tussentijd?

Ja, hij doet iets voor de Engelse artiest Barbara Dixon. Hij gaat op tour met haar voor een paar maand onmiddellijk nadat deze tour eindigt. Hij heeft zo’n drie verschillende bands waar hij in speelt, du hij zal het druk hebben gedurende onze pauze.

Weet je misschien al of hij ook een rol zal spelen op het volgende album?

Dat zal hij absoluut doen, haha. Het is al zo goed als een bandlid, officieel of niet-officieel, ik weet het niet. Hij is een voltijds muzikant, hij kan bijna alles spelen. Hij is een wonderbaarlijk figuur. Het is gewoon heel moeilijk om me nog shows voor te stellen zonder hem.

En wat met Jukka, waar zal hij zich mee bezig houden in zijn vrije tijd?

Wel, het is zowat de zakenman en de verantwoordelijke van de band, hij is bezig met EMP en het band management en al die zaken. Ik denk dat hij een rustpauze gaat nemen ook, hij heeft het nodig en verdient het. Ik denk niet dat hij muzikale zijprojecten heeft.

Hoe kan je jezelf blijven heruitvinden om niet in herhaling te vallen als een muzikant?

Wauw, ok, ik ben niet zeker of ik al niet in herhaling ben gevallen!

Iedereen valt wel eens in herhaling op een bepaald punt!

Wel, er zijn ook maar twaalf noten in de wereld. Je moet gewoon de juiste balans vinden om niet de ziel van de muziek van de band te verliezen, maar toch nieuwe terreinen verkennen, nieuwe manieren om jezelf uit te drukken. Dit gaande van verschillende genres, instrumenten, liedstructuren, gewoon innovatief zijn op een goede manier en er echt maanden en maanden aan werken en telkens jezelf in vraag stellen, stel het materiaal in vraag, vraag de mening van de andere bandleden. Zorg er gewoon voor dat het juist aanvoelt.

Als bijvoorbeeld iemand zijn mening geeft over iets, ga je er dan altijd mee akkoord en verander je het of overleggen jullie met elkaar, hoe gaat dat?

Er is een heel speciale harmonie in de band. Heel veel respect. We luisteren naar elkaars meningen. Sommige ervan zijn goed, anderen zijn slecht. Soms ben ik echt blind voor mijn eigen nummers en dan komen de andere bandleden naar mij en zeggen ze “dit is niet goed, we zouden het er uit moeten laten” en dan vraag ik waarom, “wel luister naar dit, we doen het beter zo” en dan denk ik natuurlijk, waarom ben ik daar niet opgekomen. Het is een samenwerking.

De muziek business is sterk veranderd de laatste jaren. Digitale downloads, de opkomst van vinyl, social media, … Hoe ervaar je dit?

Ik ben geen expert op het gebied, maar ik realiseer me dat er iets moet gedaan worden, want de trend is wat het is. En het feit is dat mensen nooit zullen stoppen met luisteren naar muziek, ze willen muziek maar als deze trend aanhoudt, hebben we geen inkomsten meer om zulke albums te maken omdat de platenverkoop drastisch is gedaald.

In vergelijking met het verleden?

Juist ja, sinds bijvoorbeeld tien jaar geleden. Ik bedoel, ik heb het gevoel dat er meer mensen naar onze shows komen dan ooit tevoren, maar Imaginaerum verkocht slechts half zoveel als Dark Passion Play. Maar dat is hoe het gaat in deze tijd, het is hetzelfde voor alle bands. We moeten ons concentreren op digitale download en deze kant van de muziek business, want er is niet tegenin te gaan, we moeten ons aanpassen. Je moet gewoon manieren vinden om daar ook profijt uit te halen. Als we niets terugkrijgen, kunnen we geen albums maken, dat is een feit. We moeten dat dus bekijken, maar gelukkig hebben we de grote jongens daar die daar meer over weten.

Hoeveel kilogram vuurwerk wordt er gebruikt tijdens een normaal Nightwish optreden? En is het visuele aspect van de show heel belangrijk?

Wauw. Ik zou het niet heel belangrijk noemen. Ik denk dat het heel belangrijk is dat een show goed werkt zowel in een kleine zaal als op grote podia. Beiden hebben hun voordelen maar wanneer ik de kans en het geld heb om een grote show te doen, dan verkies ik dat. Ik denk dat dit zeer goed past bij deze muziek. Bijvoorbeeld bij die twee shows in Finland hadden we het grootste vuurwerk ooit, het was een fenomenaal gevoel op het podium met al dat geknetter en lawaai.

Kan ik die twee shows vergelijken met Sauna Open Air?

Sauna Open Air was veel kleiner. Het was wel een van de grootste shows, maar dan op vlak van de show, het optreden. Over kilo’s weet ik niets af.

Ik heb nog een vraag. Je bent een gastartiest op Kari Rueslåtten’s nieuwe single van ‘The 3rd and the Mortal’, hoe ben je daarbij terecht gekomen?

Het nummer noemt ‘Why so lonely’. Het is van de band ‘The 3rd and the Mortal’ waar ze vroeger in zong. Het is gewoon iets ongelooflijk want dit album genaamd ‘Tears laid in Earth’ van 1994 is mijn nummer één album. Het is mijn meest favoriete album en ik overdrijf niet wanneer ik zeg dat ik Nightwish gevormd heb door naar dit album te luisteren. Ik wou iets gelijkaardig doen, het was het mooiste wat ik gehoord heb, vrouwelijke vocals, atmosferische metal, ik wou ook zoiets doen. Ik ben dus alles verschuldigd aan die band en dat album. Kari contacteerde me om te vragen of ik piano en keyboard wou spelen voor de cover van ‘Why so lonely’ die ze deed voor haar solo carrière. En ik dacht onmiddellijk, dit is een ongelooflijk toeval, dus dat wil ik zeker. Ik deed het in mei en het zal uitkomen op 10 september.

English version:

So first of all, how are you today? Did you have a nice journey?

Yes, our flight landed some hours ago and then we just came here by bus. I’m really good now, I just had a four hour nap, a really good meal, a really small sip of red wine… I’m feeling in top form.

How did the festival tour go so far?

It’s been excellent, really good! When you’re doing festivals, it’s kind of like this: you travel for two days, then you play a show and then you go back, then you spend some days at home. I kind of prefer the long tours in a tourbus because this is so segmented throughout the summer.

So you really go home for some days?

Yeah, we always go home in between, because it’s always just for some days. So I just go home and mow the lawn, pay the bills and stuff like that and then go back.

Are you looking forward to tonight’s performance? Any expectations here on Belgian soil?

Not really, this is the first time that we play at this festival, so we don’t really know what to expect. There are only two more shows to go for the whole tour, we’ve been going on for about a year and a half. So there is some blues in the air, because it’s all about to end tomorrow.

So it’s M’era Luna the last show. How do you feel about that, the fact that it’s the last show?

Sort of mixed feelings. I’m really happy to get back home, take a little breather and start working on the new  album… But of course there is the blues, because I’m not going to see these people for a long time after this, at least not in this way. We’re going to have a little tour-ending party on Monday, say farewell, reminiscence the past and just have a good time.

So that’s really going to be the last show?

It really will be, yes. The next show will be in spring 2015 at the earliest.

You recently played at Wacken Open Air, how did you experience the concert?

We just tried not to think about the fact that it was going to be filmed for the live dvd or whatever it’s going to be called. So it went exceptionally well. I believe it was the biggest show that we ever did when it comes to audience attendance, there were about 75.000 people there.

But you’ve been to Wacken in the past?

Yeah we have.

It was a bit different than before?

I think there were more people than before. It looked incredible from the stage, so I hope that the cameras were able to film that as well. It was one of the best shows of this summer, so good timing.

Why did you decide to record the show at Wacken specifically?

I think one of the reasons was because the camera crew was already there. Everything was just set up so we just needed to hire our own crew. For practical reasons it was the easiest to do there an also it’s a legendary festival and has the biggest attendance so it looks good with all the people.

Any idea when we can expect the Imaginaerum world tour documentary including the concert?

If everything goes as planned, before Christmas this year. I would say November/December. The idea is to try to get it out before Christmas.

With so many fans always present at your gigs, do you recognize the people who are often there in front of the stage, you know, those crazy fans always at the front row?

Quite often yeah. They are crazy in a very good way. There is for example this Finnish bunch that you get to see.

Yeah, I know them.

You know them? Eliel, Maria, Krista. These are wonderful people, we have met them many times after the show. They have kinda become like semi-friends even, it’s always a heartwarming feeling to see these people at the front row. They will be there tomorrow at M’era Luna.

I know, I’m going to pick them up and bring them there!

You will?! Oooh, ok that’s excellent! That’s sweet, very nice!

Of all the shows of the Imaginaerum tour, is there a specific one that you liked the most or will remember for some reason?

It’s really impossible to put one show on a pedestal, but the two last Finnish festivals, Ilosaarirock and Sotkamon Syke, were something really exceptional for some reason. Also Wacken Open Air because of many reasons. But there have been so many that I can’t just mention one.

So about Imaginaerum, how do you compare it to previous albums?

Well, it’s special in a way that it included the movie. We kinda went for the movie first into the project, that was the main thing of the release. The album is kind of a soundtrack to the film, so that was really special. It is the most theatrical, most orchestral album that we have ever done, it felt like the right thing to do at the time. I don’t really know what we’re going to do next. I have a gut feeling that it is going to be something a bit more simple, a bit back in time.

So a bit back to the roots.

Yeah, a bit more like a band album, because we have kinda searched this orchestral, really varied spectrum to its maximum now, that's how I feel. But maybe, you never know how the mind works… But I have three new songs done already, it’s again something a bit different.

Did you write those songs during the tour?

During the past month I’d say. Whenever I go back home I just write stuff and I have three new songs now.

How are the reactions on the movie? Both in general and from the fans?

Quite mixed. Some people have really understood what it’s all about. When they say it looks like the band, that’s a big compliment, that’s what we were after. It definitely is not a commercial film, we never thought it would be, so it wasn’t a big commercial success, especially in Finland, there it was a big flop actually.

Especially in Finland? I would have expected the opposite.

Yeah well, something happened in Finland, I don’t know. But then again in Germany and Russia it was received much better. I get people all the time coming to me saying “it really touched me” and “I really enjoyed it”, “it was really weird but I liked the scenery and the music and the story”, … I’m really proud of the result, the whole band is. No regrets at all, we did the best we could with the time and money and resources that we have. But I haven’t really thought about the film at all for months. I was looking forward already.

What are the plans for the near future for Nightwish?

Well, we all have our side projects. I have this solo album about Scrooge McDuck coming up, so the next two months I’m going to be busy with that one. Floor is going to go on with ReVamp, Marco is going to do his own projects, Emppu has Brother Firetribe. Maybe take some time off, spend time with the family. I’m going to have a little vacation in new Zealand next spring. So all this kinda stuff is going to load the batteries to write songs and be ready for next summer. The first of July we will enter the rehearsal room.

So about that music around the Disney character Scrooge McDuck. How is that going so far?

It’s going excellent. I’m really, really excited about the project. All the songs are done and then we’re gonna go to London in three weeks to record all the orchestra, percussions, choirs, singers, … Then we go back to Finland, do some guitars, pianos, all that stuff, mix it, … It should be ready by the end of October. We are looking at an early April 2014 release.

It’s sounds really like a big project for you!

It’s a personal side-project, yeah. I’m not planning to do any live shows with this one, it’s just something that I had to get off my mind.

From what I’ve heard, there are still no plans to officially continue with Floor as vocalist. Do you have any comment on this or can you tell me something about that?

Yeah well… The thing is that we haven’t really thought about it in a concrete way, because there is no need to… It’s been such a mess once again, I feel I need a month or two just to not think about the vocal issue at all. Then by the end of this year we have to make some decisions. But everyone realizes that she is on top of the list, naturally. But I don’t want to do anything official, I don’t want to make this decision just yet.

Of course, I understand.

But she’s incredible, I have nothing bad to say about her.

So for the side projects, we had Marco, we had Emppu, … For example Troy, is he doing stuff in the meantime as well?

Yeah, he’s doing something for this English artist Barbara Dixon. He’s going to go on tour with her for a few months actually right after this tour finishes. He has like three different bands that he’s playing in, so he’s going to be busy during the break.

Do you perhaps know already if he will play a role in the next album as well?

He absolutely will, haha. He’s already a band member sort of, official or non-official, I don’t know. He’s a full-time instrumentalist, he can play almost anything. He’s a wonderful character. It’s just really hard to imagine doing any shows without him, like ever again.

And what about Jukka, what will he do in his spare time?

Well, he’s like the business man and the caretaker of the band, so he’s be busy with EMP and the band company taking care of all that stuff. I think he’s going to take a little break as well, he needs it and deserves it. But I don’t think he’s has any musical side-projects.

How can you keep reinventing yourself as a musician to not fall into repetition?

Wauw, ok, I’m not sure if I have not fallen into repetition already!

Well at some point everybody falls into repetition!

Well, there are only twelve notes in the world. You just have to find the right balance of not losing the soul of the music of the band, but still search for new territories, new ways of expressing yourself constantly. From different genres, from different instruments, different song structures, just be innovative in a good way and really work on it for months and months and months and always question yourself, question the stuff that you are doing, ask for advice from the other band members. Just try to make it feel right.

For example, if someone gives his opinion about something, do you then always agree and change the stuff or do you discuss it, how does that go?

There is a very special harmony within the band. A lot of respect. We listen to each other’s opinions. But some of them are good, some of them are bad. Sometimes I’ve been really blind to my own songs and then the other members come to me and say “this is not good, we should leave this out” and then I ask “why?” “Well listen to this we do it like that” and then I’m like “of course, why didn’t I think of that before”. It’s a collaboration.

The music business has changed a lot in the recent years. Digital downloads, the rise of vinyl, social media, … How do you experience this?

I’m not an expert on the issue, but I realize that something needs to be done because the trend is what it is. And the fact is that people will never stop listening to music, they want to have music but if that trend goes as it goes, we don’t have the resources of doing these kind of albums anymore because the record sales have just dropped phenomenally bad.

In comparison to the past?

Exactly, for like ten years ago. I mean, I feel that there are more people at our shows than ever before but still Imaginaerum sold about half of Dark Passion Play, but that’s how it goes these days, it’s the same for all the bands. We have to concentrate on the digital downloads and this side of music business because there is no fighting back, you just have to adapt. You have to find ways of making that so that you can profit from that as well. If we don’t get anything back, we don’t get to do albums, a plain fact. So we have to work some ways, but it’s a good thing we have those big boys over there who know more.

How many kilograms of fireworks is used during a regular Nightwish show? And is the visual aspect of a show very important?

Wauw. I wouldn’t call it very important. I think it’s very important that a show works in very small clubs as it does on big stages. Both have their advantages but whenever we have the chance and the money to do a huge show, I really prefer that. I think this kind of music, it complements the stuff that we do really well. For example those two shows that we did in Finland, we had the biggest fireworks ever, we had a phenomenal feeling on stage with all that racket going on.

Can I compare those two shows in Finland with Sauna Open Air?

Sauna Open Air was much smaller. So it was the biggest show we ever did show-wise. But I wouldn’t know anything about kilo’s.

I have one more question. You’ll have a guest performance on Kari Rueslåtten’s new single of ‘The 3rd and the Mortal’, how did you get involved with this?

The song is actually called ‘Why so lonely’. It’s from a band called ‘The 3rd and the Mortal’ where she used to sing. It’s just an incredible thing because this album called ‘Tears laid in Earth’ from 1994 is my all time number one album. It’s my favorite album of all times and I’m not exaggerating when I say that listening to this album made me form Nightwish. I wanted to do something similar, that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard, female voice, atmospheric metal, I want to do something similar. So I owe everything to this band and this album. And then Kari contacted me saying “I’m doing a cover of the song Why so lonely for my solo, would you like to come and play the piano and the keyboard for that song”. And I was like immediately, I mean this is an unbelievable coincidence, so I absolutely will. I did it last May and it’s going to be out September 10^th.
