Op het Metal Female Voices Fest hadden we een gesprek met Floor Jansen, die er aanwezig was om een optreden te geen met haar band ReVamp. We praten over Floor's afgelopen jaar, het nieuwe album Wildcard en de toekomst met Nightwish en ReVamp. Floor voerde zowaar als eerste het woord:

Haha, dank je! Hoe gaat het ermee?
Alles goed, het is een beetje druk hier en er is heel wat te doen.
Het is al een heel druk jaar geweest voor jou he? Hoe blik je daar op terug?
Ja, dat kan je wel zeggen. Ik heb er echt nog niet bij stilgestaan, er is gewoon zoveel gebeurd. De hele heisa met Nightwish is maar een van de elementen, maar natuurlijk het grootste. Ik ben plots op tour gegaan met ze en dan ben je ook weer van huis weg, terwijl ik een plaat aan het opnemen was met ReVamp enzo. Ja, heel druk!
En hier sta je nu opnieuw op het MFVF. Voor de tweede maal met Revamp. Hoe voelt dat?
Dat voelt geweldig! De organisatie heeft me van in het prille begin gesteund ook al had ik toen na After Forever nog niets bewezen met ReVamp. Ze vertrouwden me en zeiden "dat komt wel in orde, het komt van jou". Dat is natuurlijk heel leuk om te weten en daar ben ik blij om, dus vandaar dat ik hier ook graag ben. Het is nu inderdaad de tweede keer dat ik hier met ReVamp zal optreden zo meteen, ik kijk er naar uit, ja.
Wat vind je van de line-up dit jaar? Enige bands die jouw voorkeur genieten?
Het is een goeie, diverse line-up. Niet alle bands zijn mijn ding, maar ik hou zeker wel van bijvoorbeeld Tarja, waar ik vanavond ook een duet mee zal doen tijdens haar show. Daar kijk ik ook echt naar uit. Maar voor mij hoeft het niet teveel allemaal female fronted te zijn, ik maak zelf wel zulke muziek maar zelf luister ik er weinig naar. Ik hou meer van hardere muziek en dat hoor je ook wel in ReVamp. Dus wat mij betreft mag het allemaal wat harder, haha.
Na wat ik gezien en gehoord heb op de cd release show in Bibelot, ga je het dak van de Oktoberhallen er afblazen vanavond. Wat mogen we straks verwachten van het optreden?
Haha, dank je! Nou, ik weet niet goed wat ik moet verwachten, de mensen kennen me wel en ReVamp ook wel, maar de nieuwe nummers zitten er nog niet ingebakken. Het album is nog niet zolang uit. Het is soms complexe materie om aan te horen, zeker voor de eerste keer, dus het is afwachten hoe het publiek er op zal reageren. Dit heb je ook op dit soort festivals, niet iedereen kent je muziek of zal ervan houden.
We mogen straks dus ook iets speciaal verwachten, een duet met Tarja. Hoe is dit tot stand gekomen?
Tarja is een fantastische zangeres en ik zou het altijd al fijn gevonden hebben om met haar samen te werken voor iets. Nu we samen op dit festival stonden, was dit een uitstekende kans. We hebben contact gehad met elkaar over wat en hoe, maar we hebben niet echt veel op voorhand geoefend ofzo, het zou wel goed komen want we kennen ons beiden om het zo te zeggen.
Ik hoop niet dat mensen nu domme vergelijkingen gaan maken tussen jullie, gezien de geschiedenis met eenzelfde band. Wat vind jij van zulke stompzinnige vergelijkingen en heb je daar zelf al wat van ondervonden?
Ja weet je, iedereen heeft zijn eigen oordeel uiteindelijk. Maar mensen moeten geen uitspraken doen over zaken waar ze totaal niets van kennen. Iedereen heeft zijn positieve en negatieve eigenschappen en vocaal is iedereen vaak zo uiteenlopend, hoe kan je dan vergelijkingen maken vraag ik me dan af. Maarja, zo'n mensen zullen er altijd wel zijn. Het zou beter zijn je te focussen op dingen die het wel waard zijn en er gewoon van te genieten of net niet en het dan te laten voor wat het is. Zelf heb ik er nog niet zoveel van gemerkt en dat hou ik liever ook zo.
Kan je al verklappen welk nummer het precies zal zijn?
Nee sorry, daar zal je straks achter moeten komen, het blijft een verrassing!
Het is officieel nu, de nieuwe zangeres van Nightwish zit hier voor me. Van wat ik gehoord heb wist je dit al een tijdje en zat het er dus aan te komen?
Nouja weet je, we wisten eerst nog niet hoe dit verder zou gaan maar het was wel duidelijk van in het begin dat het klikte met elkaar, de sfeer zat ook onmiddellijk goed. Het was pas na het optreden op Sauna Open Air dat we hierover concreet gepraat hebben. Dus ja, dat was in juni al ergens, maar we konden nog niets officieel maken om diverse redenen, we moesten nog een beetje afwachten ook hoe alles verder zou verlopen.
Kan je wat vertellen over hoe het is om met Nightwish en dus ook met Troy Donockley samen te werken en te touren?
Ja, het was in het begin best wel wat hectisch! Ik werd naar de Verenigde Staten geroepen om in te springen daar en meteen ook de hele tour daar af te werken. Maar het zijn leuke jongens allemaal, zoals ik al zei, het klikte zowat meteen. Ik vind het fijn om samen met hen te touren, zeker ook met Troy!
De documentaire die binnenkort uitkomt heet 'Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'... Was dit echt letterlijk zo voor jou?
Ja, dat kan je wel zeggen! Ik moest op een-twee-drie het vliegtuig op en had echt maar een beperkte tijd om de lyrics door te nemen. Ik kende wel hun oude materiaal omdat ik die in de tijd van After Forever zelf nog heb doorgenomen voor mezelf, maar het nieuwe materiaal was ik helemaal nog niet meester. Het was een ware uitdaging, maar het is me goed gelukt vonden ze!
Hoe waren die eerste shows voor jou met hen in Amerika?
Heel spannend! Ik wist niet waar ik me aan moest verwachten. Maar iedereen probeerde me zo veel mogelijk gerust te stellen dat het wel zou lukken en ook de fans waren enthousiast, dus dat hielp ook wel.
Hoe zie je de toekomst nu in, vooral met het combineren van ReVamp en Nightwish?
Dat zal wel lukken, het zal wat afwisselen. Nightwish werkt meestal in blokken van zo'n twee jaar als je wat terugkijkt. Dus in die tussentijd kan ik me volop bezig houden met ReVamp. Het is niet non-stop Nightwish. Nu heeft ReVamp voorang, maar deze zomer beginnen de Nightwish opnames en in 2015 zouden we dan gaan touren voor waarschijnlijk opnieuw zo’n twee jaar… Daarna kan ik me opnieuw op ReVamp toeleggen.
Ga je ook actief meewerken aan het schrijven van nummers en de muziek van Nightwish of laat je dat aan Tuomas over?
Eerlijk gezegd laat ik dat liever aan de jongens over. Tuomas heeft dat altijd al goed gedaan. Ik zal misschien hier en daar een bijdrage leveren voor de zanglijnen en dat wat aanpassen, maar verder liever niet. Het is een muzikaal genie, dus blijf er van af en laat die magie maar zijn gang gaan!
Wildcard is echt een killer album geworden al zeg ik het zelf. Hoe zijn de reacties van de fans en de media?
Bedankt! Wildcard krijgt heel goede kritieken en daar ben ik blij om. Nuclear Blast geeft het de nodige promotie en is een label dat altijd goed is geweest voor me. Dat helpt natuurlijk bij de wereldwijde verspreiding van het album, waardoor een groter publiek het te horen krijgt. En ja, ook de fans geven goede reacties.
Ondanks je burn-out in tussentijd, klinkt Wildcard veel rijker en diepgaander dan de voorganger. Heb je daar een verklaring voor?
Hmm, niet onmiddellijk. Misschien is het wel net door die burn-out dat ik daar kracht uit heb geput die ik in muziek kon omzetten, in de lyrics hoor je daar alvast iets van. Maar er zat reeds van daarvoor al veel in mijn hoofd en dan kwam die burn-out... Ik weet het niet echt.
Bij het schrijven van de nummers put je onder andere inspiratie uit je eigen levenservaringen, hoe voelt het om te weten dat dit wereldwijd gehoord wordt en dat dit wel eens ook een houvast voor mensen kan zijn?
Ik hoop het ergens dat het een bron van inspiratie en een houvast kan zijn voor mensen. Ik schrijf niet enkel voor mezelf maar ook voor anderen. De lyrics geven mijn gevoelens weer, hoe ik dat ervaar en het kan zijn dat mensen de nummers anders interpreteren dan ik of er een andere invulling aan kunnen geven en dat vind ik leuk.
Op Wildcard horen we onder andere Devin Townsend. Zijn er nog artiesten waar je in de toekomst mee wil samenwerken voor ReVamp?
Jazeker, ik zou graag wel met Tarja willen samenwerken voor een volgend album. Of met Angla Gossow, het lijkt me zo leuk om samen met haar een partijtje te grunten! En ken je Halestorm? Met Lzzy zou ik ook graag wel eens willen zingen!
Hoe kwam je trouwens bij Devin terecht, vanwaar die keuze?
Ik bewonder hem wel en wou hem bij het nieuwe album betrekken. Hij is ook zo veelzijdig met zijn stem en zijn muziek, net zoals mij, dus vandaar was het voor mij een logische keuze. Ik ben echt blij dat hij aan het nieuwe album heeft bijgedragen.
ReVamp heeft mooie vooruitzichten, binnenkort op tour met Kamelot. Wat volgt daarna?
Eerst inderdaad nog even op tour als support van Kamelot en daarna zullen we volgend jaar opnieuw zelf gaan touren, enkele zaalconcerten die we gaan doen, later misschien ook enkele festivals. Die data zullen binnenkort bekend gemaakt worden. Dus het zal nog een druk schema worden!

At the Metal Female Voices Fest, we had a conversation with Floor Jansen, who was present there for a performance with her band ReVamp. We talked about Floor’s past year, the new album Wildcard and the future of Nightwish and ReVamp. Floor actually started the conversation:

Haha, thank you! How are you doing?
All is fine, it’s a bit busy here and there is a lot to do.
It has been a very busy year for you hasn’t it? How do you reflect on this?
Yes, you can say that. I haven’t actually thought about it yet, so much has happened. The whole stuff with Nightwish is just one of the elements, but of course the grandest. I suddenly went on tour with them and then you’re off from home again, meanwhile recording an album with ReVamp. Yeah, very busy!
And here you are again at the MFVF. For the second time with ReVamp. How does that feel?
It feels great! The organization has supported me from the start even though after I quit with After Forever, I hadn’t proven anything yet with ReVamp. They trusted me and said “it’s going to be allright, it comes from you”. That’s of course very nice to know and I’m glad about that, so I’m also glad to be here. It’s indeed the second time that I’m going to perform here with ReVamp, I’m looking forward to it.
What do you think about this year’s line-up? Any bands you prefer?
It's a good and diverse line-up. I don't like all bands, but I like Tarja for example, with whom I do a duet tonight during her show. I am really looking forward to it. But for me it doesn't always need to be fully female fronted, I make female fronted music, but don't listen to it a lot. I prefer heavier music and you can hear that in ReVamp. So if it concerns me, it can be a little harder, haha.
After what I’ve seen and heard on the CD release show in Bebelot, you’ll blow the roof right off the Oktoberhallen tonight. What can we expect of the show here?
Haha, thank you! Well, I don’t know very well what to expect, the people know me and ReVamp as well, but the new songs aren’t so known yet. The album isn’t released that long yet. It’s sometimes quite complex to hear, certainly for a first time, so we’ll have to see and wait how the audience will respond to it. This is always the case at a festival such as this, not everyone knows your music or will like it.
We can expect something special tonight, a duet with Tarja. How was this accomplished?
Tarja is a fantastic vocalist and I always wanted to collaborate with her. Now that we’re both at this festival, it was a great opportunity. We contacted each other about what we were going to do, but we didn't really practice a lot. We were convinced it would work out fine, because we know each other and ourselves to say it like that.
I hope people will not make stupid remarks between the both of you, due to a history with a certain common band. What is your opinion about such stupid comparisons and did you experience those yourself yet?
You know, everyone has their own opinion in the end. But people shouldn't talk about subjects they don't know anything about. Everybody has their good and bad qualities and vocally everybody is often so different. So how can you compare I wonder? But such people will always be there. It would be better to focus on subjects that matter and just enjoy it or if not, just let it be. Me myself, I haven’t noticed so much about it and I rather keep it that way.
Can you already tell what song it will be?
No sorry, you’ll have to find out yourself, it stays a surprise!
So it’s official now, the new vocalist of Nightwish is sitting here in front of me. From what I’ve heard, you already know about this for a while?
Well, we first didn’t know how this would go on, but it was clear from the start that it worked out, the atmosphere was immediately good. It was only after the show at Sauna Open Air that we really talked about it. So that was June already, but we couldn’t announce anything officially yet for some reasons, we had to wait a bit too to see how all would go.
Can you tell me a bit about working and touring with Nightwish and therefore also Troy Donockley?
Yes, it was quite hectic in the beginning! I was called to fly to the USA to replace and finish the entire tour with them. But they are all nice guys and like I said, it worked out well between us from the start. It's nice to tour with them, also with Troy!
The documentary that will be released soon is called ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’... Was this really this literal for you?
Yes, you could say that! I had to take the plane immediately and had only a limited time to memorize the lyrics. I did know already the older songs because during my After Forever period I learned them for myself, but I wasn't familiar with the newer material. It was a real challenge, but they said I did it very well.
How were those first shows for you with them in the USA?
Very exciting! I didn’t know what to expect. But everyone tried to comfort me that it would work out and also the fans were enthusiastic, so that helped as well.
How do you see the future now, especially with combining ReVamp and Nightwish?
It will work out, it will switch a bit. When you look back, Nightwish mainly works in blocks of two years. So when that ends, I can focus on ReVamp, so it's not nonstop Nightwish. Right now ReVamp has priority, but next summer there are the Nightwish recordings and starting from 2015 we will tour for about two years again. After that, I can focus on ReVamp again.
Will you actively be writing Nightwish lyrics or music? Or will you leave that to Tuomas?
To be honest, I will let the boys write the songs. Tuomas has always done a great job. Maybe I will add some of my own vocal melodies, but that's all I want to do. Tuomas is a musical genius, so you don’t touch that and just let the magic happen.
Wild Card is a killer album if I say so myself. What were the reactions from the fans and media?
Thank you! Wildcard is receiving very good critics and I’m glad about that. Nuclear Blast provided the necessary promotion, the label has always been god to me. This helped with the distribution of the album worldwide, so a lot of people can hear the album. And yes, also the fans give good reactions!
Even though you had a burn-out, Wildcard sounds much richer and deeper than its predecessor. Do you have an explanation for this?
Hmm, not immediately. Maybe it’s just because of that burn-out, that it gave me strength that I could convert into music, in the lyrics you can hear a bit of that. But even before that, a lot was already in my head and only then came that burn-out… So I don’t really know.
When writing songs you get inspiration from your own life experiences, how does it feel to know that this is being heard worldwide and that it could even be a support for people?
I hope that it can be a source of inspiration for other people. I don’t write only for myself but also for others. The lyrics represent my feelings, how I experience it and it can be that people interpret the songs differently than me and that’s what I like.
On Wildcard we can hear Devin Townsend as a guest. Are there other musicians that you would you like to work with for ReVamp?
Yes sure, for a next album I’d like to work together with Tarja. Or Angela Gossow, I would love to do some grunting with her! And do you know Halestorm? With Lzzy I also would like to sing together!
How did you come upon Devin, from where this choice?
I admire him and wanted him to contribute to the album. He is also versatile with his voice and music, just like me, so that’s why it was a logical choice. I’m really happy that he contributed to the album.
ReVamp has some nice prospects, soon on tour with Kamelot. What follows after?
First indeed on tour as support of Kamelot en then next year we’ll tour ourselves again, some venues that we’ll visit, maybe later also some festivals. Those dates will soon be published. So it’ll become a busy schedule!
