Interview No Use For A Name

Artiest: No Use For A Name

Geïnterviewden: Rory - Matt - Dave

Interview afgenomen op: Groezrock

Label: Fat Wreck Chords

Ons volgend interview is met de mannen van No Use For A Name. Enkele jaren geleden moesten zij het verlies van hun frontman Tony Sly verwerken. Om Tony te eren spelen ze af en toe nog eens een optreden waaronder Groezrock 2016.

You played once at Groezrock ten years ago, can you remember anything about that show?

Rory: I can't remember anything, I know that's there was less mud as now.

Dave: Bad Religion played that year here.

No Use will be playing only today in Europe, why did you choose for Groezrock?

Matt: they chose us! They asked to do this show since Tony passed away. We did a tribute show in Canada for Tony and it was great and that was it. Last year Fat Wreck celebrated its 25 years anniversary and we did a second show because 25 years Fat Wreck is something special. It was a great show with those guys to play again and then Groezrock came up. It was kind of weird if we would do it or not. Davy from Destiny Booking is a really good friend of us and with him we arranged this show, Maybe there will be more stuff but we don't know yet, just for now this is all we have.

Rory: there is a lot to doing this, to coordinate everything, choose the friends, … It's a way of honoring him. We put it in a way that feels great for us. Everything must fall in the right place. It's very special and maybe it will be the last time.

On your Facebook page you said a few days ago “The only European show for No Use And Friends (and probably your last chance ever to see them)”. Are you guys stopping with No Use or are you doing something else?

Dave: I think we always played together if it feels right and it represents the situation, like the right way. Our friends have to be on the bill. It's hard to predict because we take one show at the time, one moment a time and just enjoy it.

Matt: We like playing together and do the songs we know.

Who are the friends tonight on stage?

Matt: We got Chuck from Mad Caddies, Joey Cape (he is doing six songs tonight, we would like to do the whole set but I want to break it up, too. Trever from Face To Face, Spike from The Gimme Gimmes.

Who is choosing those songs? You or the guest singers?

Rory: We talk about it and we wanted to do the songs with the greatest response and the popular ones. We play the songs that we want to play and even look which songs the singers want to sing.

Matt: Scott Shiflett from Face To Face will be with us on the stage as guitar player. So we have the 2 greatest guitar players from Groezrock on the stage. It's crazy. (laughs). It's feels very comfortable with those guys on my side.

Which emotions do you think you will have when you go on stage tonight?

Matt: oh man, I will be very emotional when we go on stage. I think it will be an anxious feeling.

Dave: This part of the band, us three, takes so much time to play those songs. We dedicated our life to it. It's crazy to take this opportunity. The response of doing this is crazy, the people are so nice.

Who came out with the idea to continue with No Use?

Rory: everybody else but us (laughs). We always have been asked, we asked a lot and we always said no because it didn’t feel right. Now for Groezrock it feels right so we are doing this.

What was the reaction of Tony's family when you said that you continued with No Use under the name No use And friends?

Matt: They liked the idea, they (Tony's wife and kids) are even here at Groezrock. They came to all of our three last shows.

How have you handled the loss of Tony?

Matt: Oh my god, that was a fucking nightmare. I've got a phone call at 4am from his brother John.

Dave: Than he called me at 6am to tell the news. I was weird because Matt and I didn't speak in a few years at that point.

Rory: it was difficult, worst way scenario. The funeral was mind blowing. That's why things as this are very special. It heals a little bit when this happens, doing shows on stage. This is for us a process to deal with Tony his loss.

Tony will be on stage with you tonight.

Rory: absolutely, he is here today no matter what.

Matt: I will be singing six of his songs and I'm thinking how will he be singing this part because some of our songs are high. It looks easy but it's difficult to sing like Tony did it.

Can you describe No use in three words?

Matt: Davy – Rory – Matt (laughs). No, I can’t describe No Use in three words because No Use is more than just three words.

Rory: That's a tough one so I also choose for Davy – Rory – Matt. Or wait I've got one: 'It is complicated', (laughs) and of course emotional!
